Religious teaching sparks debate

Ali Kenanoglu, chairman of the Hubyar Sultan Alevi Cultural Association, said the Alevi community in Turkey is in dire need of a secular education.

“In the districts where Alevis reside predominantly, the number of imam hatip schools are on the rise, while some secular schools in those neighbourhoods are converted into imam hatips,” Kenanoglu told SES Türkiye.

According to Kenanoglu, the Islamist tendency of Turkey’s education system also resulted in attempts to assimilate different faiths. Kenanoglu said that although their complaints at the ECHR have been found justified, Turkey still has not implemented the decisions of the Council of Europe.
